Hi, we're the Gnomestones writing and design team. We're releasing our first full gamebook, The Potato Game, in 2025. We hope you enjoy our website!

F.A.Q.

What is Gnomestones?

A dice game, a system of voting, a magical ruby, and the game production group that made all the previous things.

Where did the city of Octavia come from?

Octavia is a fantasy city created by Italo Calvino in his novella Invisible Cities. If you google the proper nouns in the previous sentence (if google still works), you will see many artists' renditions of the fabled city of Octavia.

So halflings in Gnomestones are actually half-gnomes?

Sometimes halflings are half-goblins, or half-elves, or half something else. In truth most of the residents of the human centers of activity are halfling in some way or another. But yes, in Gnomestones the classic halfling community would be half-gnomic that developed individualized property law and English-inspired class sensibilities.

How can I support Gnomestones?

Subscribe to the blog, follow our accounts, stay tuned for The Potato Game Kickstarter, which is not too far away.

Who are you in real life?

Mostly this website in run by me, Sam/Scraw, an American of Dutch-Lithuanian ancestry, and some of my friends and family and also people I met online. I learned ADND from a young age, I am a lifelong gamer, and have backgrounds in sustainability, wilderness guiding, education, justice, and folklore.

What else can you find here?

Hexmaps, folk gaming, TTRPG testing, Dungeons and Dragons history, how to play D&D, fantasy maps, gnome theory, wilderness and nature discussion, podcasts and videos, promotions, products, modules, hardcover game books, OSR (old school renaissance/revival), NSR, and social, indie gaming.
